Alliance Afterschool Academy

The Marion County Children's Alliance (MCCA) was organized in 2000 by our community leaders. Since then the MCCA has worked in many different ways to improve the lives of the 60,000 children in Marion County. To date over 20,000 children have been impacted by MCCA.

"Children First" is our motto. Our commitment is to provide a safe, healthy and nurturing environment where all our children can learn and grow.

Since 2002 the Alliance has offered a variety of afterschool programs; both during the school year and in the month of June. The availability of funding has been the major determinent as to how many children were served.

This past June with financial support from Kids Central and the Early Learning Coalition we served 3,300 children at 34 different sites around Marion County. Most of the programs focused on academic tutoring to help students improve their reading and math skills. In addition we sponsored swimming classes, two basketball programs and a teacher that taught "signing" as a way to communicate with the deaf.

Afterschool Tutoring Does Not Have To Be The Same Old Thing!

Children can't learn when they are bored, restless and watching the clock. Afterschool tutoring should be exciting, fun and educational! Depending on the situation we work to provide homework assistance, tutoring in reading, language arts, math and writing as well as arts & crafts and recess time.

Current programs of the Academy:
    Supplemental Education Services (SES)
    English Speakers of Other Languages
    Private Tutoring at Sunrise Elementary
    Summer Enrichment
    Summer Activity Guide
Details of the various programs are described below.

ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages)

This school year will be the 5th year for this program. It began at Romeo Elementary and because of the continued support from Florida Thoroughbred Charities it now operates at 5 elementary schools.

The program's purpose is to assist children who either speak no English or whose English skills limit their school success. We have found that with a little extra attention these children very quickly can become proficient in English. They are all anxious to learn English but they just need a little extra help.

Summer Enrichment

Marion County Children's Alliance since 2003 has funded Summer Enrichment programs in school, church and community settings.

In our 8th year of collaboration, MCCA and Family Times Publishing have printed 50,000 copies of the 2008 Summer Activity Guide (SAG) to distribute throughout the community to assist parents in finding activities for their children.
